Health

The Pomeranian is one of few breeds which have excellent health and a long lifespan (12-14 years, and sometimes even longer).

However, there are several issues common in small dog breeds that owners can face.

- Teeth

As the breed has gotten smaller, so has the jaw of the dog. However, the roots of the teeth have remained as long as those of their ancestors. Because of this, they often need a veterinarian’s help in removing their baby teeth.

Additionally, some Pomeranians are prone to the formation of tartar, and as a result, bad breath. This can be solved by choosing suitable food.

- Joints

Joint problems are primarily linked to the small size of the Pomeranian. The most common problems are weak ligaments in the legs and patellar luxation.

As well as this, Pomeranians are prone to sprains and breaks of the bones because of their fragility and small size.

It is important to be gentle with the Pomeranian. Do not allow it to climb to high places and to jump from there. Floors in your home must not be slippery, and the Pomeranian should be fed in moderation, to avoid excess weight.

- Eyes

The short nose and sharp forehead in the breed can cause excessively runny eyes. Dust, wind, heat, and food allergies can make this worse. Eye drops can help.
