NATURAL DIET

There is an abundance of ready to eat food for dogs available to dog owners. We are not going to recommend specific brands. New owners tend to have more questions when they want to feed their dog a natural diet. This is what we will focus on here.

Meat - Raw meat is good for dogs. This is the most natural food for them. Raw meat is easily digested and helps to keep the dog's teeth clean. While the puppy is growing, it's best to feed it beef or lamb, as this meat doesn't contain added hormones. When the puppy has stopped growing (after 9 months), you can start giving it chicken. Don't feed your dog pork, as it can contain parasites.

The meat in your dogs bowl doesn't have to be expensive. You can give your dog hearts, stomachs. However, limit the amount of kidneys and liver, as these can contain toxins and parasites.

You should not give your dog cooked bones, because the heat changes the structure of the bones and causes them to break into sharp shards. Chicken wings and necks (trachea must be crushed with a tenderizer) can be given to be chewed to help with the dog's dental health.

Other foods that are good for dogs include eggs, cottage cheese and fish. However, fish should not be given more than twice a week to prevent an excess of phosphorus. The best fish for dogs is salmon, it has no bones and parasites.

Vegetables. A dog's body isn't made to digest vegetables, and they come out practically the same as they went in. Nevertheless, vegetables are still vital in a dog's diet. Vegetables are important for the dog's gut bacteria. These bacteria are responsible for immune health and to prevent the dog having diarrhoea. Superfoods for dogs are spinach and pumpkin.

Never give your dog salt or sugar.

Remember: if you want change your dog's diet to a new food, it is best to introduce it slowly into the current food over several days. First 25%, then 50%, then 75% and eventually 100% new food. If the dog starts to have diarrhoea, it means that we have added the new food too fast.
