Safe Walks

Even small dogs need walks. It is important for their physical and mental health, as well as their training and discipline. To make walks safe for your puppy, it is important to be aware of the dangers that are present outside the home.

  • Pomeranians of all ages should be on a lead when walking on the sidewalk, crossing the road, or in parks where there could be bigger dogs. This will protect your dog from getting attacked by another dog, from the dangers of moving vehicles, and won’t let your pup run away by himself.

  • Many dogs love carrying sticks in their teeth. If you notice that your pup is holding the stick by one end with the other end pointing towards the ground, it is vital to stop and distract him with another toy. Otherwise, if he stumbles, he could get a throat puncture with the stick.

  • You should not allow dogs to run and jump somewhere where there could be sticks, glass, or something else sticking out of the ground that could pierce or injure them when they land.

  • If your little dog is playing with another dog who is wearing a metal collar or chain around their neck or chest, your pup can break his teeth.

  • When putting your dog in the car, it is important to secure him to the seat to make sure he doesn’t jump out of an open door and ensure his safety in the car.

  • Never leave a dog in the car alone, especially in warm weather.

  • When putting your dog in the car, make sure that the leash is entirely inside the car. If you accidentally leave the end of the leash trapped outside the door, it can wind around the wheel and strangle the dog.

  • Whenever you are leaving your yard in the car, always check where your dog is. It might be running around under the car.

  • If you are using a lift, it is important to go in and out of the lift holding your Pomeranian in your arms. The most dangerous and irreparable thing that can happen is if the dog runs inside the lift and the leash gets trapped in the doors. This is made even more dangerous in the case of a retractable leash with a handle.

  • Retractable cord leashes can be very dangerous for many reasons.

- Pomeranians are very lively and quick. A cord leash can easily wrap around your legs or the legs of your companion and cause a fall. If the dog tries to run, the cord can burn or even cut your leg. If you are using a retractable lead near other people, you should pull the leash in so that your dog is next to you.

- If the cord gets driven over by a motorcycle or a bicycle, the cord can wrap around the wheel and injure the rider, the dog and the owner.

- If another dog grabs onto the cord while playing, he can cut or tear his tongue.

- When the cord is unwound to the end, there will be a sharp jerk. This can injure the dog’s trachea or even break the neck.

- An unwound cord can wrap around the dog’s neck and strangle it.

- The cord can cut a person’s hands or legs. If the handle gets torn off, it can hit your or your dog’s head and knock out some teeth.

- Children should never be allowed to use a retractable cord leash.

Being aware of the dangers will help us keep our little friend safe and our walks with them will bring us a lot of joy.
